Behind the Badge: Prioritizing Mental Health

Behind the Badge: Prioritizing Mental Health Mental health matters. Lt. Jonathan Castillo and counselor Lidia Oviedo-Torres discuss officer wellness and peer support. (HOLA! Staff)

This month on HOLA! Happy & Healthy, we shine a light on the importance of mental health within law enforcement. We sit down with LT. Jonathan Castillo of the Laredo Police Department and licensed professional counselor Lidia Oviedo-Torres for an honest conversation about the emotional realities officers face while serving our community.

Together, they discuss the Laredo Police Department's Peer Support Program, an initiative designed to provide officers with confidential support, resources, and a safe space to prioritize their mental well-being. They also share insight into the difficult situations officers encounter on the job and how those experiences can impact their emotional and psychological health.

This meaningful conversation serves as a reminder that mental health matters for everyone, including those who dedicate their lives to protecting others. By encouraging open dialogue, reducing stigma, and promoting access to support, we can help build healthier individuals, stronger families, and a more resilient community.
